Read an interesting article in the FT recently which I feel is definitely worth sharing;
It talks about the benefits of local housing developments where a small but growing number of people are saying ‘yes in my back yard’ and that would make them a Yimby. If you oppose these types of development then that makes you a Nimby or ‘not in my back yard’!
The surprising part was that it is in fact the leader of the Eastleigh Borough Council who is championing the cause. Aptly named House, Keith is promoting a local plan that will ultimately provide 2,000 or more homes in the area.
It is worth mentioning that if you don’t know it, this is rural are sandwiched between Hampshire and Southampton. Keith House argues that it is better to foster growth than manage decline. Given that the local authorities are under increasing pressure from central government to build more homes in order to hit the target of 300,000 per year by 2025, House has a good point.
I think majority of people agree that more affordable homes are needed which is also a way of giving the younger generation a chance to own their own home. Question is, where do each of us fit in; are you a Yimby or a Nimby?!
